Can you compete using Compete?

We have recently received inquiries  from several hospital or health systems Webmasters who want to know our opinion about Web sites like Alexa, Compete.com, and Quantcast.com. These  “third party web data providers” use proprietary algorithms to estimate the number of visitors on any Web site, and have become a major resource for many Web marketers.

“Our Web site sucks”

If you manage or are otherwise responsible for your organization’s Web site, I’m sure you’ve heard that more than once.  I used to hear it at Aurora all the time.  I’d get off the phone with a colleague from another hospital or health system who was just gushing about the site and asking how on earth we did all that, and somebody would darken my door to tell me right to my face how bad our site was.

Spreading The Word

Well, we just left the 11th Annual Internet Conference in Las Vegas! Immersing myself in the enthusiasm surrounding blogs and social networking has inspired me to get started on my own blogging. So time to stop putting it off and get on with the brain dump online. Coming to this conference, or attending any conference for that matter can be a reinvigorating experience. But what happens to that enthusiasm between the time that conference ends and the time it starts again next year?

Welcome to the Greystone blog!  Those of you that know us, know that we truly believe that the use of the Internet — as a business tool — in hospitals is imperative, yet, quite frankly, extremely underutilized.  Hospitals are notoriously slow to change and accept new things, especially when it comes to electronic medium.  Yes, there are many of you that are doing great things, and it takes those pioneers to continue to advance the state of the state.  But there are still many of us that are struggling to justify the resources just to have a Web site.  For the past few years, we’ve observed such a tremendous growth in the use of social media for healthcare.  Web 2.0 is not the future anymore, it’s here.  Whether we like it or not; whether we are prepared for it or not; it is here, and not going away.
