Day in the life of a Greystone consultant

The life of a consultant isn’t all glamour and hotels.  Actually, I’m still looking for the glamour. We also get to enjoy the results of some very tough times in the airline industry.

Last week, for example one major carrier was unable to get me home due to weather problems. That happens, and I understand that. Their best recommendation was to rent a car and drive to another airport about 80 miles away and catch a later flight. It sounded better than being away from home for another night, since we’re away from home quite enough, thank you very much.
The rental car was fine, and it all worked out, except for two tiny details:

The agent neglected to mention that they had a flight to the city I drove to that left 20 minutes after I pulled away in my rental car. Oh yes, they did have empty seats.

They wanted to charge me a $50 change fee to take the new flight, even though the change wasn’t my fault.

Adding insult to injury was the fact that not one employee of the airline ever expressed any regret for my predicament, and they gave me wildly inaccurate directions to the other airport (thanks to my son, David, for digging up directions while I drove).

Yes, it’s very exciting and rewarding helping healthcare providers with their online strategies. But don’t envy us too much. If you ask me, rolling in after midnight when you are usually asleep by 10 p.m. had better involve one heck of a party, not a ridiculous snafu courtesy of the U.S. airline industry.
