My Favorite Online Article of the Year

Today we’re going to use our blog to point you to what has to be my favorite online article of the year from Smashing Magazine:  10 Harsh Truths About Corporate Websites

If you have been a Greystone.Net client, you’ll recognize much of this.  Certainly the notion of a “Web center” will sound familiar, as will the need for a limited number of key audiences and a heavy user focus. And while some have misconstrued our recommendations for an “Internet Steering Committee,” we certainly have never advocated using such a committee for site design.

I especially like the possibly overstated statement on #5 (You are wasting your money on social networking).  Depending upon what you are doing and how much you are spending, chances are the author is right.  But the message offered is spot on:  Social media is not another broadcast channel, and if you treat it that way, you are wasting your time, your money, and your potential audience’s time and good graces.

At any rate, I found so much in this article that resonated from my days working on corporate Web sites, in and out of healthcare, that I wanted to share it. See how much of it you can relate to. And then see what you can do to get better!
